Summertime is often associated with fun and relaxation, but stress is an ever-present force this time of the year that sneaks up on us derails all the joys of the season (and our personal well-being). I hear from so many patients who have fatigue, irritability, brain fog, anxiety, sleep issues, and/or aches and pains – and often there is no apparent cause. Doctors frequently say, “There’s nothing wrong” because standard blood results all fall within “normal” ranges. it is not often suggested that an undiagnosed and treatable genetic issue could be underlying the entire problem. This episode covers the basics of how be tested to find out if you have an MTHFR mutation, what to do about it if you do, and how other genetic mutations might be affecting you.

I devoted an entire series to how genetic mutations can affect your health. You can find the series here: http://drdoni.com/genetic-mutations

But under suboptimal conditions—when we’re hit with more stress than our resources can handle or when we don’t give our bodies the support they need—our bodies suffer and become less able to recover.

Many people are afraid to do a detox or cleanse – and for good reason! When people think of a “cleanse,” they often think of products that address the digestive tract. In fact, many companies sell a cleanse-in-a-box, which is essentially a week’s worth of laxatives, and call it a cleanse. While having regular bowel movements is absolutely a good thing — that’s NOT the whole point of a cleanse. These cleanses are very hard on the body, which is why I was determined to create a cleanse that doesn’t make a person feel worse!

Good adrenal health is imperative to wellness, which is why call it one of the three “problem networks” of stress. When our adrenal glands are over-taxed, we can experience adrenal distress, or even adrenal burnout. This episode covers the three ways to address adrenal burnout.

Cortisol, the “stress hormone,” has a profound effect on the brain chemicals that determine mood, sleep, energy, and focus. When we are stressed continually, our adrenal glands either adapt in a healthy way, or they mal-adapt, leading to cortisol levels that are too high or too low. Imbalanced cortisol levels play a huge role in weight gain, mental clarity, anxiety and depression, motivation, and overall feelings of vitality or fatigue.

There is not one single answer, nor one magic pill, when it comes to our health. That is because our bodies are intricate systems, with many interrelated processes. Even looking at unwellness from one perspective – stress, for example — is more complex then it may seem at first. And health is not achieved with a simple stress-reduction technique.
