When it comes to our immune system, there is so much we can do to help our body’s out.

First, we need to think about how stresses negatively affect immune function and learn what we can do to help our bodies recover from stress.

Next, we can use nutrients, herbs, homeopathy, and peptides to support our immune system to work better.

We can also use supplements that are anti-microbial, antioxidants, and anti-histamines to help fend off infections and support recovery.

Whether dealing with a long-term virus – such as EBV, HPV or HSV – or a short-term infection, such as a cold, flu, bladder infection, or anywhere else in or on your body, when it comes to naturopathic medicine, there is so much we can do to help your body heal itself.

Listen in to this podcast where I review:

-My favorite ways to support health and immunity

-How to think about the use of supplements

-Why it is important to work with a naturopathic doctor (or expert practitioner who can guide you) to individualize your protocol to be effective for you.

-My go-to supplements

-How to find high quality supplements

When it comes to healing by addressing the root cause, making diet changes is an important place to begin. So then the question becomes – where do I begin? Which foods should I stop eating? And what am I going to eat instead?

In this episode, Alison Marras [@foodbymars], Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, talks about how following a paleo diet helped her heal her health issues. Now she is sharing her favorite go-to recipes with real food that’s good for you in her new cookbook - The Paleo Gut Healing Cookbook.

The paleo diet is based on the concept of eating the way humans ate back in history. Whole foods, organic, without added sugar or preservatives. It is also gluten-free, dairy-free, and grain-free overall. It can be taken up a notch to be AIP – autoimmune protocol – by eliminating nuts, seeds, legumes and eggs.

These foods are eliminated in an effort to decrease inflammation in the body overall, as well as to prevent and support the healing of leaky gut. Studies show that people with autoimmunity are more likely to have food sensitivities and leaky gut. Avoiding the most common food sensitivities – gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts and grains – makes it so those foods are no longer able to add to the problem.

The issue is that it can be challenging to shift your diet and still get enough calories and good tasting food when following a paleo or AIP diet. That’s where Alison’s cookbook comes into play. She has figured out how to make cooking paleo easy and tasty at the same time.

-

Be sure to listen in to this interview to find out:

-How long do you need to avoid the reactive foods

-Should you consider doing a food sensitivity panel

-Which recipe from Alison’s book am I looking forward to trying

-What is the connection between leaky gut and autoimmunity

-Why her website is called FoodbyMars.com

One of the latest trends in nutrition and health is intermittent fasting, and for good reason. And yet, it is not new. Intermittent fasting has been around as long as humans have existed.

So, what is it that has brought our attention back to the concept of “time-restricted eating”?

As Dr. Sally LaMont [IG @drsallyskitchen], a naturopathic doctor for 40 years and good friend of mine, explains in this episode, intermittent fasting is associated with decreased obesity (weight loss), improved blood pressure and memory, and increased longevity.

That means we could add years to our lives by not eating for at least 12 hours overnight.

How does that happen? When our bodies fast for at least 12 hours, it turns on something called autophagy, which is how our bodies clean out damaged cells and debris inside our cells. As we get rid of what we no longer need, it stimulates the growth of new healthy cells, including in our nervous system.

-

Fasting also turns on the ability to burn fat, which is what often wish we could do all the time. The default for our bodies is to burn carbs (glycogen) and muscle tissue first. But once we’re in a fasted state, we start burning fat, such as that stubborn fat that likes to hang out on the waist and hips.

Meanwhile, when the fasting window of 12 to 16 hours is over, then it is time to eat. What you choose to eat is just as important as when you choose not to eat, according to Dr. Sally.

She has created a blog, videos, and online course teaching viewers how to choose the healthiest, nutrient-dense, antioxidant-filled, tasty foods. You can find it at https://drsallyskitchen.com.

-

By eating well in a finite eating window, and then not eating from after dinner, overnight, and into the morning, you’ll be making a big difference in your health. Be sure to listen in to this episode to find out all the details of how to do it and where to get more support.

If you have diabetes, are pregnant, or have a major health issue, be sure to check with your doctor or practitioner before starting a new diet or fasting plan..

It is becoming more common to hear the phrase – “Address the Root Causes.”

That is a phrase that is ingrained in my training as a naturopathic doctor (I graduated from Bastyr University in the year 2000). Professors and mentors challenged us to think about what could be underlying a patient’s health issue, whether that be a past trauma or stress, a toxin exposure, an injury or infection, the use of a medication, the loss of a loved one or a relationship, and so on.

It is this way of thinking that, I have to say, has made the biggest impact on my life and health. And it has informed the way I help my patients for over 21 years now.

Whether you are struggling with fatigue, sleep issues, anxiety or depression, digestive troubles, weight gain, skin rashes, migraines, menstrual-related or fertility issues, autoimmunity, cancer, and/or chronic viral infections, such as HPV and EBV…when you address the underlying causes, you are much more likely to achieve lasting resolution.

And this is the case no matter what your genes are! I say this because every week I receive phone calls from people asking me whether I can help them with their genes. The answer is yes, and I have an upcoming episode on that topic to go into more detail.

But the best way to address your genes is to address your stress, which is another way of saying “address the underlying causes.” We have to figure out what has turned on your genetic predispositions and take steps to give your body the support it needs to turn those susceptibilities back off again.

In this episode, I encourage you to consider:

-How past stresses and traumas could be underlying your health issues

-Common limiting beliefs set in childhood that could be sabotaging your health now

-How we become susceptible to addictions that perpetuate our stress

-The connection between mind and body, and how it can show up

-Ways you may leave yourself vulnerable that you didn’t even realize

-How to start raising your awareness for underlying causes

By simply asking the question of yourself – what is at the root of this health issue – you may already get a download of information from within yourself and your intuition.

To do that, however, sometimes requires that we create space in our day and life for self-reflection, even for 1 to 10 minutes at a time. Be sure to listen in to the examples I provide and ways you can start to become more aware of connections and underlying unresolved issues that you can now address.

I believe it is possible to live a life you love with passion and purpose…without ruining your health. It does require awareness, self-reflection, acceptance, forgiveness, and willingness to choose differently.

I look forward to your comments, and if you enjoy this episode (and others) please leave a review on Apple podcast or your favorite place for listening in to How Humans Heal.

The quality of health and life women put up with is much less than what is possible. We accept it as the norm – to feel terrible – but the opposite is possible – to feel amazing.

Hearing this from an OBGYN is eye-opening. Dr. Kyrin [@kyrindunstonmd] is saying what women have been noticing – that conventional care is good at emergency care, but not reversing chronic issues.

Whether perimenopause, postmenopause, menstrual irregularities, HPV and abnormal paps, recurrent infections, anxiety and depression, fatigue, weight gain, and/or low sex drive – this message applies.

You don’t have to keep on dealing with feeling uncomfortable, in fear, and alone, blaming yourself. And a fist-full of prescriptions is not going to fix it.

But the answers are not likely to come from a visit with your standard doctor’s office. This is coming from an MD who has decided to tell the truth.

Living in a state of hormone impoverishment. It’s not okay. Even if your labs are all “normal.”

-

In this episode we talk about:

-How to see past the confusion to see the real cause and address it

-Weight gain is not a math problem, it’s a communication problem

-It’s possible for your health to change when you have the right support

-If there’s no drug for it, you’re not going to hear about it in medicine

-Stress and cortisol are hidden disruptors that need to be addressed

-The hormones are all connected and affect each other

-

Instead of waiting until you have a disease to prescribe a medicine or perform surgery so doctors can be victors, it’s time to provide information that can stop the pattern from progressing in the first place.

Dr. Kyrin even covers the myths of health care and insurance, and she breaks down the truth about hormone replacement therapy.

Please listen in for a conversation that will give you a bird’s eye view of health care and your health and empower you to make choices that has the potential to completely shift the trajectory of your life.

Mother of four sons, Dr. Madiha [IG @holisticmommd], family physician, has taken what she learned in functional medicine and applied it at home with her family.

While it’s not what she learned in medical school, she quickly figured out that to heal herself from autoimmunity, she needed to change her diet and start seeing food as medicine. She’s been teaching her children the same power of nutrition and helping them to learn how to choose foods based on what their bodies need.

Now she’s put all that information into a book – The Holistic Rx for Kids – complete with references, recipes, and tips for helping your kids through common health issues.

In this episode we talk about:

-How to talk with your kids about food and health

-How prioritizing health as a family can help you too

-What it looks like to eat a rainbow of foods

-How anxiety and attention issues are often linked to food choices

-What a difference healthy eating can make in your child’s lifetime

Join me as I talk with Dr. Madiha, and also about her new book for kids, to help them learn how to choose for themselves to eat less sugar and more colorful foods.

You can find about Dr. Madiha at https://HolisticMomMD.com. Her books are available starting this week on Amazon.

Cortisol is our main stress hormone made by the adrenal glands. It is a normal hormone we need every day, and when we are stressed, cortisol output changes to signal throughout our body to respond to that stress.

When we are exposed to ongoing stresses – from trauma, to toxins, to lack of sleep – which is going to happen to us as humans, our cortisol levels can get stuck at a higher or lower level. That’s what I call getting stuck in “stress mode.”

-

Instead of trying to escape stress, I encourage you to embrace it! Embrace that we are going to be exposed to stress and that our bodies are going to respond.

Then the question becomes – how is your cortisol responding? We tend to assume that our cortisol is too high, but that is actually not always the case. It is also possible that your cortisol is too high at certain times of day, and too low at other times of day.

And then we also need to consider adrenaline, which also responds to stress, because it can become too high or too low.

The way your body responds to stress is unique to you. The best way to know what your cortisol and adrenaline are up to at this point in your life is to test the levels.

Then we can help get your cortisol back to optimal levels using natural approaches – such as dietary changes, nutrients, herbs, and stress recovery activities. We are actually supporting your adrenal glands to heal and recover from stress so that they can make the right amount of cortisol and adrenaline again, without relying on an outside source.

In this episode I talk about:

-How to know if you are stuck in stress mode

-How to best test your cortisol and adrenaline levels

-How cortisol affects all other areas of your body and health

-How optimizing cortisol levels is essential for healing

-How the treatment for high cortisol is different than for low cortisol

-How focusing on helping your cortisol come back to optimal is a better strategy

-How I’ve figured out how to most efficiently and effectively heal adrenal distress

I want you to feel empowered about your body and your health. I believe that is possible when you learn and understand what is happening inside your body and how it responds to stress. Then you can make choices for yourself about how you’d like to help your body recover from and become resilient to stress.

Instead of taking over for your adrenals, or ignoring them, it’s time to find out what they need and provide it

You’re not going to receive this type of information from your standard medical visit. And yet, in my opinion, it is the most important information for your health now and into the future.

Listen in to this episode as a starting place and sign up to hear from me as soon as my newest book is available.

Finding your purpose in life can be a matter of seeing what is right under your nose. But we often miss it because we are so caught up in being who we think we are supposed to be. Learning to know yourself and listen to yourself is essential for healing and transformation.

Visionary, Britta Aragon [IG @brittaaragon], shares how listening to her intuition has shaped her life. From overcoming Hodgkin’s lymphoma, writing her first book in her 20s, starting a successful skincare line, selling that company, getting a divorce and traveling around the world, Britta has trusted her vision and herself.

Even when fear or her ego told her not to do it, she took risks and took it as a chance to listen to her authentic self.

Now she works with people one-on-one and in groups online and in retreats to help them transform their lives by helping them to find their purpose and follow their vision.

-

In this inspirational interview, Britta shares:

-Ignorance can be bliss

-Our cells listen

-What is the narrative we are listening to

-We get to choose again

-How she has learned to harness her sense of urgency

-Unhealed trauma leads to addictive patterns

-Healing happens in priority order

-How to get good at listening to your inner voice

-You are worthy already

A Course of Miracles teacher and creator of a program called Detox to Destiny, Britta helps people to do things like write a vision plan for a new business, to change careers, write a book, or get ready to leave a marriage.

She says it is about learning how to shift from external power to internal power. When you take away the things you thought defined you, and are with yourself, in your internal power, and you have a guidance system for your personal plan, you are the most powerful person you can be.

She teaches clients how to tune in to the listening, to download a business idea, book, or what’s next. How to listen to the whispers of the soul. Once you have trained your mind to listen to that voice, then when it comes to making a decision, you know how to hear the voice, and what does and doesn’t feel right.

How do humans heal? By learning who we really are, be our own best friend, and see ourselves from a different perspective. Prayer and meditation shifts us from fear-based thinking, to universal intelligence. Then we can see all the ways to look at the same situation and be able to choose powerfully.

Learn more about how to know and listen to yourself in Britta’s online summit – Back to Center Life Reset. It is free, 11 days, and online starting November 11th. I’m honored to be one of her guest speakers on the topic of resetting from stress.

You’ve probably heard of hypnotherapy as a way to help a person stop smoking, start sleeping, or deal with a fear of flying. It does do that, and more!

In today’s episode I had the chance to talk with my friend Alexandra (Sasha) Tarakanov, clinical hypnotherapist all about the benefits of hypnotherapy and the life-changing results her clients experience.

Clinical hypnotherapy, like many things, has specialties and established methods therapists can be trained in and offer to clients, including past life regression. Alexandra is 1 of 26 people who have completed level 3 of Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique (QHHT), a process that allows participants to access a part of themselves that holds the answers.

In this episode, Alexandra shares about:

-Why she chose to become a hypnotherapist

-Example experiences from her clients over the past 8 years

-Why people fear hypnosis, and why there is nothing to be afraid of

-How hypnotherapy helps us to become more “in control” of our lives

-Why revisiting your past, with hypnotherapy, can help you change your future

-How spiritual transformation occurs during hypnotherapy sessions

-Why it is especially helpful for Highly Sensitive people to use hypnosis

-How it is possible to use hypnotherapy in a group and in an online program

Alexandra is now sharing her own hypnotherapy method, where she teaches people to use self-hypnosis for personal growth. She uses her spiritual guidance to help people find and connect with their own spiritual guides.

If you have been struggling with your health and have a feeling that having a spiritual connection would help you, then definitely listen in to this podcast. Don’t leave hypnosis as a “last resort” – it offers gentle and yet profound healing opportunities to know yourself better and give yourself the support you need.

Statistics show that 30 million Americans have struggled with an eating disorder at some point in their lives. The most common eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and orthorexia. Over exercising, overeating, and using food to avoid intolerable situations are also forms of disordered eating.

Many people with eating disorders go through conventional treatment, which is strict and based on managing weight and calories. It’s not focused on how the person’s psychology is underlying the condition, or how the condition is affecting their psychology.

-

In this episode of How Humans Heal I spoke with Mindy Gorman-Plutzer of The Freedom Promise [@thefreedompromise] who is changing the way support is offered for those with eating disorders.

Mindy herself recovered from an eating disorder, and in the process, observed what was missing from the treatment, and became passionate about offering other solutions for people going through eating challenges and desiring the same sort of transformation.

-

We discuss:

-How all systems of the body and mind are connected

-The difference between “Doing recovery” versus being recovered

-The power of story to understand the context of the behaviors

-The behaviors started out as a solution; they are not the problem

-Eating disorders versus disordered eating

-How digestive issues are so common with eating disorders

-The gut-brain axis

-The benefits of supporting vagal tone

-And so much more

Mindy explains that the definition of recovery is to regain what was lost. When we lose ourselves to compulsive behaviors, we lose a part of ourselves. The part that is left is bound by rules. Mindy thinks of recovery as liberation. She emphasizes that recovery looks different for everybody because we are unique individuals.

Our first experience of being seen in life was related to eating. As we start to develop autonomy, if we don’t feel safe, we always have food to turn to. It helps us and represents love and safety. Pile on cultural messages related to food and diet, and we end up in comparison instead of connection. We become disconnected from the wisdom of our bodies. It is no wonder that eating disorders are so common.

90-98% of people with eating disorders today also have severe digestive distress. Children who have digestive issues, have a higher predisposition to an eating disorder later in life. It is important to address digestion and reactions to foods in the recovery process, to really allow the person to understand and reconnect with their own bodies.

-

I love how Mindy shares her insight into how humans heal: “Humans heal when they feel empowered. When they are involved in a therapeutic partnership with a practitioner who knows how to listen. We can become the masters of our own healing.”

She wishes she could get the decades of her life back that she gave up to the scale and the image she thought she needed to project. Now she helps others find the sacred space of solitude in themselves where there is no fear.

-

If you are someone you know is struggling with eating or your relationship with food, please listen in to this episode. To know that there is another way of supporting you through the process of recovery can be empowering itself.

In this episode, we’ll be discussing metabolism. One of the most common questions I am asked is “what is metabolism?” I’m glad you asked! Metabolism is the essential process our bodies do to turn our food into energy.

That’s the energy we use to wake up in the morning, get through our day, create art, play music, dance, and enjoy our loved ones.

In our busy lives, it is easy to take metabolism for granted. It’s just what our bodies do.

If you start to notice weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, or if you are diagnosed with diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, fatty liver, and/or cognitive decline, it is likely your metabolism is struggling.

-

Listen in to this episode where I talk about what bogs down the metabolism, including:

-Stress

-Environmental toxins

-Imbalanced gut bacteria

-Inflammatory foods

-Sugar and a high carb diet

-Leaky gut

-High cortisol

-

What helps improve metabolism?

-Eat less sugar

-Include protein in every meal

-Eat smaller meals

-Stress reducing activities

-Choose organic food and toxin-free products

-AND…one of the best examples of eating to improve metabolism is the Mediterranean Diet.

-

Research shows that the Mediterranean Diet can decrease inflammation and improve blood sugar levels. It comes down to choosing real, whole foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and fish or poultry.

I hope you’ll join me in this episode recorded while I was visiting the Mediterranean region of the world. I share about my favorite discoveries and meals.

In this episode, Dr. Doni and her colleague, Dr. Carol Lourie [@carollouriehealth], also a naturopathic doctor, talk about how to prevent and recover from breast cancer by giving women the support they needed all along.

Carol points out that 1 in 8 women will experience breast cancer in their lifetime. After assisting her close friend through breast cancer treatment, and observing what worked and what was lacking, Carol was inspired to help other women.

Now Carol uses nutrition as well as Chinese medicine and homeopathy to help women to prevent side effects, such as anemia, during chemotherapy treatment, and then to recover from treatment and prevent a recurrence.

 -

In this episode, Carol explains:

-How cancer cells do whatever they want

-We need to make our bodies inhospitable to cancer

-Cancer is a metabolic disease

-How to feel EMPOWERED against recurrence

-Why she suggests to let go of adversarial language related to cancer

-Why it’s important to listen to messages from your tumor

-How processing past trauma helps to prevent cancer

-Sugar feeds cancer

Breast cancer can become an illness like any other chronic disease in that it requires ongoing support and treatment. It’s important that women have a feminine and compassionate approach to addressing what caused the cancer in the first place.

We also talk about how to eat in a way to prevent cancer, and other health issues, including a discussion of the Mediterranean Diet. And why being willing to prioritize selfcare is essential.

 -

As Carol says, “we’re supposed to be able to do everything ourselves” is an unfortunate message that needs to change.

-

In her program, Path of Breast Cancer, Carol has helped thousands of women to navigate breast cancer and prevent it from coming back. If you or someone you know has been looking for this kind of support, be sure to check out Carol’s website at www.CarolLourie.com

We get used to thinking of things a certain way. We get used to things the way they are and start to anticipate that it will remain the same. It becomes “normal” or familiar. Even discomfort and pain can become our usual existence. We find ways to suppress the discomfort, but that doesn’t really solve it.

By standing back and observing from a different perspective, we can see that what we experience as discomfort or pain is actually our body telling us that it needs attention. That it is over-stressed and under-rested.

When we are stressed day in and day out, our nervous system doesn’t have a chance to reset, and our digestion doesn’t have a chance to digest and absorb nutrients that we need.

When we push ourselves to extremes – of too much or too little – even of something that is “good” for us, it can become a stress too.

That stress leads to inflammation, overgrowth of microbes in the microbiome, and susceptibility to a whole range of health issues.

In this episode, I talk about:

How our digestion works

How your body and digestion are unique

What is the microbiome

How to think about being a human with a microbiome

What disrupts your microbiome

Ways to help bring your microbiome back into balance

What is helminthic therapy and how it can help

By understanding the body you live in and what it needs in order to thrive, you can make choices to give your body what it needs and not too much of what it doesn’t need more of.

Listen in to learn a different perspective on your digestion and health in general. Please reach out if you’d like more information about how I can help you.

Whether you are struggling with hormone imbalances (PMS, PCOS, menstrual cramps, fertility issues, low thyroid function), infections (EBV, HPV, recurrent UTIs, vaginitis, etc), autoimmunity, anxiety, migraines, or joint pain…and even if you don’t have any digestive symptoms…it’s important to start by healing your gut.

Why? Because your digestion is where you digest your food and absorb nutrients from your food. Those nutrients then go on to help make hormones, neurotransmitters, and to support immune function.

Your digestion is also where your gut bacteria – which outnumber the human cells in your body – do important things like make nutrients and neurotransmitters, detoxify hormones, and support healthy immune function.

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Destia Skinner [IG @drskinnersonline], Naturopathic Doctor and my classmate at Bastyr University in the 90’s, about:

-How to know if your gut needs attention

-Where to begin with supporting digestion

-Simple things you can do right now to help your gut

-What causes leaky gut

-How leaky gut can cause symptoms anywhere in the body (or brain)

-What is the microbiome

-How does it get thrown off track

-How to feed, and not over-feed, your gut bacteria

We even had a chance to talk about fecal transplants and helminthic therapy as researched methods for re-establishing a health gut biome and digestion.

It can be confusing and overwhelming to attempt to heal your gut on your own. There is so much contradictory information on the internet and varying approaches from different practitioner, that it can seem like you are spinning your wheels.

Dr. Destia and I are here to help you solve your digestive distress, whether you knew it was an issue or not, including with the new online course she created with her husband (and also my classmate in ND school), Dr. Bryan Skinner. Find it as www.RevolutionaryGut.com.

This episode was recorded from one of Dr. Doni’s 5-Day Stress Recovery Workshops. She wanted you to get a sense of what she covers in the workshop while also learning how to think about your immune system differently than you may have thought about it before.

Instead of working as a linear system with either more or less function, the immune system is much more complex, involving numerous mediators and activities.

To truly shift or really reset your immune system, and improve your ability to fend off infections while also decreasing inflammation, allergies and autoimmunity, we need to stand back and address the immune system from a perspective of stress recovery.

Here’s why: Stress, of various forms, turns on genes that cause our genetic tendencies to increase. Stress also decreases our ability to fend off infections, and increases the likelihood of allergies and autoimmunity.

While, yes, we can make diet changes to improve immunity, and take nutrients and herbs to support immune function, if we don’t get to the root cause of the issues, we’ll need to put in a constant effort and may never see enough change.

In this episode, Dr. Doni talks about:

Diet changes that can reset your immune system

How blood sugar imbalances relate to low immunity

What does healing your digestion have to do with fending off infections

Why big changes lead to small results, and small changes lead to big results

How you can reset your gene expression and turn off autoimmunity

What to take to fend off viruses, even chronic viruses like EBV and HPV

If you’ve been stressed about preventing infections and wanting to feel protected from viruses, bacteria, etc, then you’ll want to listen to this episode.

Dr. Doni helps you to see that by shifting your perspective about how you think about your immune system, you can become empowered and confident about fending off infections.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the gut-brain axis – the essential and often disregarded connection and communication between our nervous system and our digestion.

Well, in the case of this interview with Dr. Peter Kozlowski [IG @doc_koz], functional M.D. and author of Unfunc Your Gut, we discuss the gut-brain axis and even more deeply, we talk about how emotional trauma affects gut health.

Dr. Peter shares his personal story with emotional stress and how healing from alcoholism allowed him to be more open and loving to himself, and open to other medical approaches. That is how he came to complete training as a functional practitioner, during his medical residency, which was a rare opportunity that changed the trajectory of his career.

Subsequently, he learned from experts in the functional medicine field, including why it is so important to heal the gut.

In this episode we talk about:

The gut-brain connection

The vagal nerve

Common symptoms that show your gut-brain axis needs attention

What is leaky gut and how to heal it

Is a food elimination diet worth doing

When a food sensitivity test is indicated, and which to choose

Understanding the gut microbiome and how to address it

We also covered started tips to help you get your digestion back on track. Amazingly, the simplest things can make a big difference when it comes to digesting better and absorbing important nutrients.

In addition to Dr. Peter’s insightful explanations, you’ll also hear about my experience as a naturopathic doctor helping patients with digestion distress, leaky gut, food sensitivities and stress-related health concerns over the past 21 years.

If you’ve struggled with heartburn, nausea, bloating, and/or abdominal pain, you’ll definitely want to listen to this episode. And if you have a feeling that stress, whether recent or from your past, could be negatively affecting your digestion, this episode is going to give you so many answers.

Listen in and feel free to share this episode with others who may be struggling with digestive issues.

Below you can find information about my books, blog, Stress Remedy 21-day Program and supplement line, all designed to assist with recovery from the effects of stress, including for your digestion.

Thank you so much for joining me here, at How Humans Heal.

I don’t pretend to have all the information. I simply share what it is that I’ve learned as a human and as a naturopathic doctor. And I share the opportunity to learn from other practitioners and experts who are also wanting to share what they’ve learned about being human and supporting our health, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

I really believe that there is not one perfect or cookie cutter solution for all of us. We are each unique individuals, with unique needs. And yet, at the same time, there is so much we can learn from each other to help all of us along the path of human existence.

That is my passion and joy and mission in my life – to honor being human and human existence, and to be curious, accepting, open and learning along the way.

I share what I’ve seen to be helpful for myself and for my patients. That doesn’t mean it is necessarily going to be helpful for you, and yet I hope it is. And if not, we have learned, yet again.

I’m glad you found me and that you are here. I welcome your desire to be more human and to be living your life in a state of greater awareness, love and gratitude.

Please let me know how I may be of service to you.

Physical therapist and medical visionary, Melanic Weller, shares how she started “thinking outside of the box” for her patients with rare conditions. By looking at the whole body, instead of just where the pain is located, she realized that often it’s by understanding what is happening in the body/mind/spirit that we find the deepest healing.

The interconnectedness is not random. There are 11 million bits of information occurring between our brain and the rest of our body every second. This happens via the vagal nerve. If the vagal nerve is compressed, it’s like a traffic jam in the signaling.

We talked about:

Understanding the vagal nerve

Decompressing the vagal nerve

How we embody stress on the horizontal plane

The more restricted we are physically, the more affected we are emotionally

What our stories about our bodies tell us about ourselves

Symmetries in nature and in our bodies

The vagus nerve gives us access to our own consciousness. Our mind and body are fully interconnected, and to the extent that we separate them, we are separate from ourselves.

It is often through the way we speak about ourselves or tell the story of ourselves that we can identify the source of illness and rebalance our vagal nerve.

This interview just makes me more excited to continue researching and helping patients to understand how stress affects us and how to become resilient to stress. Supporting vagal nerve function is an essential part of the stress recovery process.

If you’ve been struggling with your health and wanting to think about it from a whole different perspective, be sure to listen in to this episode.

When it comes to needing to have a medical procedure or surgery, there are absolutely ways to support yourself through it so that you can recover quickly.

I’ve been guiding patients to just that for over 2 decades, and I recently had an opportunity to use my surgery protocol myself. I had surgery on the front part of my neck/chest a few days ago and am sharing about the process with you in this podcast.

In this episode, I talk about:

What it is like to have an unknown condition and go through the process of finding a surgeon

Preparing – mentally, physically, and spiritually – for surgery

Supplements I took to prepare and to help my body heal

Asking for support and help

Being open to how your recovery process looks

There can be a lot of unknowns, when it comes to facing a medical procedure, and usually unknowns are what can trigger fear and stress. Add to that the physical stress of a medical procedure, and the whole thing can push you “over the top”, so to speak.

Knowing all this, my goal for preparing for surgery was to create as much known and support as I could, and then “go with” whatever unknown occurred.

Now that I’m on the other side of it, I’m so grateful to my medical providers and my friends and family, who really showed up in support of me. I’m also beyond happy that I had the surgery and am now able to truly support my body to heal and prevent this from happening again.

Please listen in to this podcast if you are preparing for a medical procedure, or if you’ve worried about needing to have a procedure at some point in the future.

And reach out to me and my office at office@doctordoni.com if you’d like to meet with me so that I can set up a surgery protocol for you and guide you through YOUR recovery process.

Hormone imbalances, fertility issues, and autoimmunity are more and more common. In this conversation with Shannon Miller, a Holistic Hormone Practitioner @3leafhealth, she and I explore the reasons why and what we have each found helpful for returning to balance.

First of all, as Shannon says, “the biggest resource we have is our own body. We know our body better than anybody else, even a doctor. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not feeling what you feel.”

By knowing your body and listening to it, you’ll be better able to respond and navigate from hormone imbalances or autoimmunity, back to health. For example, pain is a signal from your body that something is wrong. From there you can ask “What is my body asking for?” The more aware we are, we can respond more quickly to give our bodies what they need.

We, however, tend to be distracted from ourselves and our bodies. It can help to remember that our body is trying to keep us alive.

From her experience having an eating disorder for 10 years, Shannon shares how she felt at war with her body. Then she realized that her body was trying to protect her. Once she figured out what her body was trying to protect her from, she was about to make changes that changed her health and life.

Having recovered from the eating disorder and conceiving a pregnancy when a doctor told her it wasn’t possible, Shannon shares how she now thinks about food choices, without stressing herself more.

Here are a few of her tips:

Don’t think of foods as “good” or “bad”

Choose foods that have the effect we want on our bodies

Aim for balance instead of rigidity with ourselves.

Nourish your body and your soul

Be in tune with your body

Shannon and I agree that it’s when we are stressed and disconnected from our bodies and selves, that health issues develop. Our body is trying to tell us it needs attention and stress recovery.

For example, not ovulating is often due to stress. We need ovulation for getting pregnant and also for hormone balance and improved health.

To shift that pattern, our bodies need to feel safe. That comes with consistency and taking care of yourself over time.

Keep in mind that shifts back to balance don’t tend to happen overnight. It’s tempting to chase the quick fix, but it’s not a reality.

Give yourself time and let it be a healing journey. We are here to support you along the way.

Preparing for pregnancy and preventing pregnancy loss are two of my favorite ways to support women in my practice. I see them as times when women often feel isolated, afraid and confused about what to do. And that’s when I feel most motivated to help.

In standard medical care and prenatal care, there is not a lot of support – in terms of nutrition, clinical nutrition, and addressing underlying issues – in general, but in particular for before pregnancy and in early pregnancy.

So if you are feeling overwhelmed and on your own… you are actually not alone. It is very common to feel that way, and I’m here to help you.

In this podcast episode I cover:

-Why is it so common to feel anxious and stressed about pregnancy?

-What is possible in terms of support to guide you through to a healthy pregnancy

-Testing that’s important to do, to support your body and your fertility

-That it’s possible and important to individualize your doses and strategy

-How working with a naturopathic doctor can make all the difference

-The protocols I’ve developed over 20 years to help women like you achieve the pregnancy of their dreams

-How to identify limiting beliefs and shift them in order to be more ready to receive a pregnancy

Overall, a connection with your true self – you as a loving, compassionate human being – is most important on the fertility journey. From that place, you’ll be choosing based on what is best for you, and your future baby. Then you’ll also be decreasing your stress levels, which optimizes hormone levels and ovary function.

I’m happy to help you. Reach out to my office if you have questions, would like to meet with me and have me to start supporting you. Many women begin with my Women’s Wellness Program, but we can also modify it to match for you. And if you have HPV, I can help there too. And in the process of clearing HPV, you’ll be improving your fertility – it’s a win, win.

1 in every 9 women are diagnosed with Endometriosis. Thousands more go undiagnosed while struggling with debilitating pelvic pain and main other symptoms related to their menstrual cycle. Meanwhile, these women are told their symptoms are “normal” and that the only treatment is to take synthetic hormones (a birth control pill).

I’m outraged about this – as a naturopathic doctor and as a woman who also experienced severe menstrual cramps for over 15 years of my life.

It’s time that women are acknowledged for the pain – physical and emotional – they experience and receive REAL help, and hope, to feel better. Not only that, but to receive support with fertility, which is often compromised by this condition.

Cindy Dabrowska, R.D., the Endometriosis Dietitian, agrees and focuses her work on helping women in this way. With her background in nutrition, she guides women to make changes that can transform their bodies and get them out of pain. She does this without overly restricting food choices, and by helping women to understand their bodies.

Cindy and I discussed how it’s possible to support your ovaries to makes hormones in a balanced way, and to support your liver to detoxify those hormones efficiently and effectively. It’s also important to support healthy digestion of food, absorption of nutrients, and balanced/optimized gut bacteria.

We talked about the testing we both use to show us what’s out of balance and needs support. And how we can use nutrients, herbs, diet changes and stress reduction to rebalance and how to maintain over time and stress exposure.

In this episode we cover:

Cindy’s health story that inspired her to help other women with pain

Common symptoms associated with Endometriosis

Why it is so difficult to get a diagnosis

Theories of the underlying cause of Endometriosis

How to think about heal Endometriosis, starting with digestion

How blood sugar levels and gut bacteria affect estrogen

Other possible triggers or underlying causes of Endometriosis

Diet changes Cindy suggests from the start

The power of the right kinds of fats to decrease inflammation and pain

Too often I hear from women that they feel alone in their pain, and as though they hit a dead end in terms of the options available through standard medical options.

I shared about some of the things that helped me get out of pain, and what I’ve seen help my patients over the years. Dysmenorrhea (severe menstrual cramps) and the associated symptoms, including migraines, PMS/PMDD, and fertility issues can be addressed using natural approaches that are effective and lasting.

It’s one of my favorite things to help, because it can make such a difference to get out of pain. This is why I’m so glad to introduce you to Cindy, who is an amazing and supportive resource.

One of my most favorite things to do is to chat with another naturopathic doctor about health issues we help patients to address using the medicine we love.

In today’s episode, I spoke with Dr. Nicole Fujiyama, a naturopathic doctor and Bastyr graduate who specializes in helping patients to reverse autoimmunity.

The secret to success turning off autoimmunity, as Dr. Nicole explains, is all about asking the question “why” in order to identify the underlying cause that triggered the autoimmunity in the first place. Then we can address the cause or causes to create a reset in your immune system.

Common “underlying causes” of all different types of autoimmunity are:

Inflammatory foods, like gluten

Leaky gut

Imbalanced gut bacteria

Toxins, like from mold, pesticides and metals

Medication use, such as antibiotics and NSAIDs

Infections, including viral infections

Stress in general

There are tests we use to help us identify the underlying causes for you, but keep in mind, these are not tests you’ll find at the usual doctor’s office and they are not usually covered by insurance.

But if you’ve been struggling with autoimmunity and tired of hearing “take this pill and come back in a few months” – then it’s time to consider naturopathic medicine to help guide to a solution.

Both Dr. Nicole and I have a family history of autoimmunity, and that motivated both of us to research more, try new things, and be willing to make changes in order to prevent autoimmunity in our lives.

You can do it too! Listen in for answers to common questions and concerns related to autoimmunity, including…

Common symptoms

What tests to request

Why we start with gut healing (even if you don’t have digestive symptoms)

How did autoimmunity start in the first place

What triggers a flare in symptoms

When is the best time to start preventing autoimmunity

and

What does stress have to do with it, anyway?

Whether you have Hashimoto’s, Rheumatoid arthritis, Celiac disease, or any other autoimmune condition, or have a family history of any of these conditions and want to stop it from happening to you…

Join us for this episode and reach out for us to guide you. Take your power back when it comes to your health and your immune system. You’ve got this.

Don Gino was chosen to be a shaman at age 15 by his grandfather, who was an elder healer in Peru. He was named “Chaka-Runa”, which means “bridgeman,” based on his ability to connect people to the healing spirits of plants, such as Ayahausca.

In this rare interview with Don Gino, he describes shamanism, healing plants around the world, and the value of going to other realms in order to experience deep healing from past traumas.

We, as humans, tend to get stuck in the patterns and past stress exposures in our lives. We try to block those stresses out, but ultimately they influence our life, our choices and our health.

Plants, and Ayahausca in particular, which Don Gino refers to as “The Queen”, has a gentle and yet effective ability to create profound shifts in perspective, resolution of past experiences, and understanding of oneself.

It works throughout the body, in each cell, to process and release what we have been carrying – emotionally, physically and spiritually. It is an introspective and individual process within a ceremony with music sung and played by a shaman to bring the spirit of the plant to us for healing.

In this episode we talk about:

What is shamanism

What are common reasons people choose to work with a shaman

What Don Gino has observed as a shaman for over 50 years

Understanding plant medicines and Ayahuasca specifically

Importance of working with a shaman who prioritizes safety

What happens in a ceremony with Ayahuasca

What is purging

Going “beyond the mind” in order to experience inter-connectedness and one-ness can be life changing.

In that state, we become aware of the spirit of the plant, and everything in nature, including ourselves, which is what many of us have been searching for all along anyway – acceptance of our true selves.

Ayahausca has been studied for numerous health issues, including for depression, anxiety, addiction, migraines, and cancer, amongst others. I experienced it first-hand, in Peru, in ceremonies with Don Gino, and found it to be unmatched in its ability to resolve stress and create healing.

If you are interested in learning more about Don Gino and the ceremonies he offers in Peru, be sure to visit Chaka-Runa.com. Or reach out to me and I’ll help you determine whether this may be an option for you to consider for your health and in your life.
