When it comes to our immune system, there is so much we can do to help our body’s out.

First, we need to think about how stresses negatively affect immune function and learn what we can do to help our bodies recover from stress.

Next, we can use nutrients, herbs, homeopathy, and peptides to support our immune system to work better.

We can also use supplements that are anti-microbial, antioxidants, and anti-histamines to help fend off infections and support recovery.

Whether dealing with a long-term virus – such as EBV, HPV or HSV – or a short-term infection, such as a cold, flu, bladder infection, or anywhere else in or on your body, when it comes to naturopathic medicine, there is so much we can do to help your body heal itself.

Listen in to this podcast where I review:

-My favorite ways to support health and immunity

-How to think about the use of supplements

-Why it is important to work with a naturopathic doctor (or expert practitioner who can guide you) to individualize your protocol to be effective for you.

-My go-to supplements

-How to find high quality supplements

When it comes to healing by addressing the root cause, making diet changes is an important place to begin. So then the question becomes – where do I begin? Which foods should I stop eating? And what am I going to eat instead?

In this episode, Alison Marras [@foodbymars], Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, talks about how following a paleo diet helped her heal her health issues. Now she is sharing her favorite go-to recipes with real food that’s good for you in her new cookbook - The Paleo Gut Healing Cookbook.

The paleo diet is based on the concept of eating the way humans ate back in history. Whole foods, organic, without added sugar or preservatives. It is also gluten-free, dairy-free, and grain-free overall. It can be taken up a notch to be AIP – autoimmune protocol – by eliminating nuts, seeds, legumes and eggs.

These foods are eliminated in an effort to decrease inflammation in the body overall, as well as to prevent and support the healing of leaky gut. Studies show that people with autoimmunity are more likely to have food sensitivities and leaky gut. Avoiding the most common food sensitivities – gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts and grains – makes it so those foods are no longer able to add to the problem.

The issue is that it can be challenging to shift your diet and still get enough calories and good tasting food when following a paleo or AIP diet. That’s where Alison’s cookbook comes into play. She has figured out how to make cooking paleo easy and tasty at the same time.

One of the latest trends in nutrition and health is intermittent fasting, and for good reason. And yet, it is not new. Intermittent fasting has been around as long as humans have existed.

So, what is it that has brought our attention back to the concept of “time-restricted eating”?

As Dr. Sally LaMont [IG @drsallyskitchen], a naturopathic doctor for 40 years and good friend of mine, explains in this episode, intermittent fasting is associated with decreased obesity (weight loss), improved blood pressure and memory, and increased longevity.

That means we could add years to our lives by not eating for at least 12 hours overnight.

How does that happen? When our bodies fast for at least 12 hours, it turns on something called autophagy, which is how our bodies clean out damaged cells and debris inside our cells. As we get rid of what we no longer need, it stimulates the growth of new healthy cells, including in our nervous system.

-

Fasting also turns on the ability to burn fat, which is what often wish we could do all the time. The default for our bodies is to burn carbs (glycogen) and muscle tissue first. But once we’re in a fasted state, we start burning fat, such as that stubborn fat that likes to hang out on the waist and hips.

Meanwhile, when the fasting window of 12 to 16 hours is over, then it is time to eat. What you choose to eat is just as important as when you choose not to eat, according to Dr. Sally.

She has created a blog, videos, and online course teaching viewers how to choose the healthiest, nutrient-dense, antioxidant-filled, tasty foods. You can find it at https://drsallyskitchen.com.

-

By eating well in a finite eating window, and then not eating from after dinner, overnight, and into the morning, you’ll be making a big difference in your health. Be sure to listen in to this episode to find out all the details of how to do it and where to get more support.

If you have diabetes, are pregnant, or have a major health issue, be sure to check with your doctor or practitioner before starting a new diet or fasting plan..

It is becoming more common to hear the phrase – “Address the Root Causes.”

That is a phrase that is ingrained in my training as a naturopathic doctor (I graduated from Bastyr University in the year 2000). Professors and mentors challenged us to think about what could be underlying a patient’s health issue, whether that be a past trauma or stress, a toxin exposure, an injury or infection, the use of a medication, the loss of a loved one or a relationship, and so on.

It is this way of thinking that, I have to say, has made the biggest impact on my life and health. And it has informed the way I help my patients for over 21 years now.

Whether you are struggling with fatigue, sleep issues, anxiety or depression, digestive troubles, weight gain, skin rashes, migraines, menstrual-related or fertility issues, autoimmunity, cancer, and/or chronic viral infections, such as HPV and EBV…when you address the underlying causes, you are much more likely to achieve lasting resolution.

And this is the case no matter what your genes are! I say this because every week I receive phone calls from people asking me whether I can help them with their genes. The answer is yes, and I have an upcoming episode on that topic to go into more detail.

But the best way to address your genes is to address your stress, which is another way of saying “address the underlying causes.” We have to figure out what has turned on your genetic predispositions and take steps to give your body the support it needs to turn those susceptibilities back off again.

In this episode, I encourage you to consider:

-How past stresses and traumas could be underlying your health issues

-Common limiting beliefs set in childhood that could be sabotaging your health now

-How we become susceptible to addictions that perpetuate our stress

-The connection between mind and body, and how it can show up

-Ways you may leave yourself vulnerable that you didn’t even realize

-How to start raising your awareness for underlying causes

By simply asking the question of yourself – what is at the root of this health issue – you may already get a download of information from within yourself and your intuition.

To do that, however, sometimes requires that we create space in our day and life for self-reflection, even for 1 to 10 minutes at a time. Be sure to listen in to the examples I provide and ways you can start to become more aware of connections and underlying unresolved issues that you can now address.

I believe it is possible to live a life you love with passion and purpose…without ruining your health. It does require awareness, self-reflection, acceptance, forgiveness, and willingness to choose differently.

I look forward to your comments, and if you enjoy this episode (and others) please leave a review on Apple podcast or your favorite place for listening in to How Humans Heal.
